✨Every year from late February to early April thousands of Sandhill Cranes migrate to Monte Vista Colorado. Witnessing their mating dance at dawn, their mass group exodus at sunrise, and their return to the wetlands each evening at sunset is a sight to behold.
The sounds of the cranes, the ducks, and the geese in the area in chorus together will heal your soul and restore your bones.
🪿There’s a Sandhill Crane Festival in early March where you’ll receive some excellent education to add to the experience and meet more than a few bird experts. But you don’t need to attend the festival on those dates to take part in this magical spectacle.
I’ve been witnessing this annual event on and off for decades. Every time I miss it, I feel like I missed out. 10/10 recommend putting this on your bucket list.
Add a cold plunge in the Rio Grande River, a bumpy dirt road drive, and a short hike to the Natural Arch in the area and you’ve had a proper adventure.
💦Heck, you could even throw in a visit to a hot springs in the valley here, here, or here. (there’s 3 in the area.)
Enjoy!
Need groceries or a quick bite?
🥑My favorite spots are:
Simple Foods Market for groceries
Gosar Ranch Food Truck for an unforgettable bratwurst - if you’re lucky they’ll be grilling outdoors on a sunny day (on the corner next to Simple Foods) and serving up brats with homemade sour kraut! Best I’ve ever tasted hands down.
While you’re there: 💧 Take a cold plunge in the Rio Grande River
AND!! I got this text from a friend last week after she followed my beta & maps to see the cranes. So sweet…
